About this position
PhD Research Fellow in Digital Entrepreneurship at the University of Oslo, Department of Informatics, Norway.
This PhD project examines digital entrepreneurship and, in particular, venture failure: why digital startups stagnate or shut down, what founders learn, how they narrate failure, and what knowledge failed ventures can offer beyond the people directly involved. The project combines conceptual work with qualitative research methods such as interviewing, narrative analysis, and comparative case studies.
The candidate will study ventures founded by alumni of the Department’s MSc programme in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management who received STUD-ENT funding over the past decade. The position is affiliated with the Entrepreneurship (ENT) group and involves participation in the group’s research, teaching, and social activities. Supervision is planned within the ENT group, with a main supervisor in the department and a co-supervisor from the Digital Innovation (DIN) group.
Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree or equivalent in entrepreneurship, innovation, management, information systems, informatics, psychology, or another relevant field; strong interest in qualitative research; ability to work with abstract and theoretical ideas; fluent English. Candidates without a master’s degree may complete the final exam by 15 December 2026. Experience from entrepreneurship or the startup ecosystem, especially failed ventures, is considered an advantage. Scandinavian language skills may help with fieldwork but are not required.
Funding and terms: Three-year PhD fellowship, with a possible fourth year for teaching/supervision/research assistance. Salary range NOK 550,800–595,000 depending on competence and experience.

Candidates without a master’s degree may complete the final exam by 15 December 2026. Preferred: personal entrepreneurship/startup experience including failed ventures, familiarity with the Norwegian or Nordic entrepreneurship ecosystem, and Scandinavian language skills as an advantage for fieldwork.
