About this position

PhD opportunity at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in the Department of Structural Engineering, Trondheim, Norway.

This PhD project sits in NTNU’s Concrete group and focuses on concrete durability, specifically alkali-silica reaction (ASR). The research investigates how alkalis are released from aggregates, how calcium availability affects this release, and how alkali binding in cement paste with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can moderate ASR damage. The project combines experimental work and thermodynamic modelling, using approaches such as pore-solution analysis, concrete expansion testing, alkali-binding isotherms, and microstructural characterization including SEM-EDS.

The position is linked to a strong research environment with close collaboration between NTNU, SINTEF in Trondheim, and TUM in Munich. The work aims to improve understanding of the interaction between aggregate alkali release and cement-paste alkali binding in modern composite cements, helping to clarify ASR risk and mitigation strategies in concrete infrastructure.

Funding is available for the PhD position, with a gross salary normally of NOK 580,000 per year. The appointment is for three years of doctoral work, and a fourth year may be considered for career-promoting tasks depending on qualifications. The project also receives additional support from Heidelberg Materials and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens Vegvesen).

Eligibility highlights include a relevant master's degree in civil engineering or materials engineering with specialization in concrete design/materials, a strong academic record, and excellent English skills. Preferred experience includes laboratory work, academic writing, presentation skills, and familiarity with concrete/chemistry-related methods. The application deadline is 19 October 2026.

Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no and should include degree transcripts and diplomas, CV, a copy of the master's thesis, a motivation letter, and contact information for referees.

What's required

A relevant Master's degree in civil engineering or materials engineering specialized in concrete design and/or concrete materials, or equivalent, is required. The degree must include a major independent project of minimum 30 ECTS equivalent to a master’s thesis. Applicants must have a strong and relevant academic background with an average grade of B or better according to NTNU's grading scale, or an equally strong academic foundation if grades are not letter-based; applicants with weaker academic backgrounds may be considered if exceptionally suited for PhD education through relevant work experience and/or peer-reviewed academic works. Excellent written and oral English language skills are required. Preferred criteria include good oral and written presentation skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, track record or work experience in the relevant research area or industry, proven laboratory experience (e.g. solution analysis, BET, laser diffraction analysis), academic writing experience, and a keen interest in theoretical, experimental, and practical engineering research.

How to apply

Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no using the application link provided. Include transcripts and diplomas for Bachelor's and Master's degrees, CV, copy of Master's thesis, motivation letter, relevant publications or research work, certificates, and contact details for three referees. If education was taken abroad, attach documentation of scope and quality, and any diploma supplement or HK-dir statement if available.
