About this position
PhD opportunity in molecular biology of cyanobacteria at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU)
The Faculty of Biology at LMU Munich is offering a PhD position in the area of cyanobacterial molecular biology, based in the Botany section in Planegg, Germany. The project sits within the Emmy Noether project “Metabolic foundation of developmental transitions” led by Sofía Doello and focuses on how unicellular cyanobacteria adapt their metabolism to environmental stress, especially nutrient limitation.
The successful candidate will work on the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6308 and will investigate metabolic regulation through a combination of physiological, biochemical, and molecular approaches. Main research tasks include the creation and physiological characterization of mutant strains, enzyme purification and characterization, and the analysis of whole genome sequencing data. The role also includes publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at national and international conferences, and supervising bachelor’s and master’s students.
This is a part-time position at 65% and is remunerated according to TV-L E13. The position starts on 2026-10-01 and is limited until 2029-09-30. LMU highlights structured training, close supervision in an international team, access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, and opportunities to attend workshops and conferences. The project offers room to shape the direction of your research.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline. Prior molecular biology research experience is required, and excellent English is expected. Experience in cyanobacterial cultivation, gene editing, protein purification, and/or enzymatic assays is advantageous.
The application deadline is 2026-08-16. Applicants should submit a CV, a one-page motivation letter, contact details for two referees, and a copy of the master’s certificate or expected certification date. Applications submitted after the deadline may still be considered until the position is filled.
