The Department of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate in Quantum Compiler Technologies. This PhD position is sponsored by the NFR project Smart Precision for Quantum Resilience, focusing on the intersection of precision tuning, approximate computing, and quantum error correction. The project aims to optimize error correction codes in logical qubit implementations, leveraging static code analysis tools such as compilers. The research is a collaboration between NTNU and an academic institution in Italy, offering an international environment and opportunities for research stays abroad.

As a PhD Candidate, you will join the System Software Group and contribute to high-quality research, academic publications, and popular science dissemination. You will participate in international activities, including conferences and research stays, and be prepared for evolving work duties. The position offers career guidance, a supportive and inclusive working environment, working capital for project implementation, and favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. Free Norwegian language training at a basic level (A2) is also available.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master students may apply if their degree is completed by 2026-09-30. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale. Working proficiency in C/C++ programming languages and good written and oral English communication skills are essential. Admission to the PhD programme in Computer Science within three months of employment is mandatory. Preferred qualifications include experience with LLVM/MLIR compiler frameworks, precision tuning techniques/tools, gate-based quantum computing, and Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills at B2 or better. Personal qualities such as independence, structured work, teamwork, motivation, and adaptability are highly valued.

Funding: The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 3-year employment period and a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund deducted. The position is conditional on external funding from the NFR project Smart Precision for Quantum Resilience. Working capital is available for project implementation, and candidates will have access to employee benefits and the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
