About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in Reinforcement Learning and Model Predictive Control (MPC) at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics (ITK) in Trondheim, Norway. This position is part of the Norwegian Center on AI for Decision (aiD), a research centre with strong industrial connections and collaborations with over 60 companies. The research will focus on the integration of Reinforcement Learning (RL) and MPC, addressing topics such as verification pathways, risk management, sample efficiency, optimized exploration, and latent/belief state embedding in RLMPC. The project will involve theoretical and algorithmic development, software implementation, and validation on industrial case studies.
As a PhD candidate, you will be supervised by Professor Sebastien Gros, director of the Norwegian Center on AI for Decision. You will participate actively in the aiD center and NTNU's strategic area Energy, and engage in international activities such as conferences and research stays. The position offers a stimulating environment with access to career guidance, mentoring, and a diverse, inclusive workplace. NTNU is committed to equality and diversity, and encourages applications from all qualified candidates, with measures in place to promote gender balance in scientific positions.
The position is fully funded by NTNU for three years, with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 (subject to a 2% pension fund deduction). Employees benefit from membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (SPK), free basic Norwegian language training (A2), and a range of employee benefits. The employment is subject to admission to the PhD programme in Engineering Cybernetics within three months of the contract start date, and physical presence at NTNU is required.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (or equivalent) in Automation, Cybernetics, Mathematics, Data Science, or related fields, with a strong academic record (B or better on the NTNU scale). Strong skills in mathematics, probabilities, optimization, and programming are essential. Experience with AI, machine learning, reinforcement learning, numerical optimization, MPC, and programming (Python, C) is preferred. Good oral and written English skills are required. The application must include a CV, transcripts, diplomas, project outline, motivation letter, publications, certificates, and referee contacts. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no by 20 May 2026.
For further information, contact Professor Sebastien Gros ([email protected]) or HR Consultant Berit Dahl ([email protected]).
