About this position

Maastricht University is recruiting a PhD Candidate in Supramolecular Hydrogels for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering within the BioMatt group of Dr. Matthew Baker at MERLN (Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine). The project sits at the interface of chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering, and regenerative medicine, with a strong focus on supramolecular polymers, dynamic hydrogels, self-assembly, polymer synthesis, biomaterials, and tissue engineering.

The PhD research aims to develop new supramolecular polymeric materials for dynamic and responsive biomaterials and bioinks. You will design, synthesize, and characterize polymers with tailored chemical and mechanical properties, combining molecular self-assembly with covalent reinforcement to create biomimetic hydrogels whose mechanics, dynamics, and functionality can be controlled in space and time. Applications include 3D cell culture, bioprinting, injectable materials, patternable hydrogels, vascularization, osteochondral regeneration, and living materials with microbial components.

The position is embedded in the ERC Consolidator project SupraValent and offers a fully funded 4-year PhD opportunity in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment. The group works at the chemistry–bioengineering interface and has expertise in biomaterials, tissue engineering, microfabrication, and cell biology. The vacancy is based at Maastricht University in Maastricht, Netherlands.

Applicants should have an MSc or equivalent in Organic/Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Required experience includes organic and/or polymer synthesis, purification, lab documentation, and characterization methods such as NMR, GPC, rheology, and mechanical testing. Experience with self-assembled or dynamic systems, UV-Vis, fluorescence, DLS, or cryo-EM is an advantage. Strong scientific English at CEFR C1 level is required.

What's required

MSc or equivalent in Organic/Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Applicants should have demonstrated knowledge and/or hands-on experience in organic and/or polymer synthesis, including multi-step synthesis under supervision, standard purification techniques, and structured lab record keeping. Experience with polymer and small-molecule characterization methods such as NMR, GPC, rheology, or mechanical testing is expected, and familiarity with self-assembled or dynamic systems is an advantage. Interest in supramolecular/polymer chemistry for bioengineering and soft matter applications is important. Excellent scientific English at minimum CEFR C1 is required. Availability to start on short notice is highly desirable, though the start date is flexible for highly qualified applicants.
