NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD candidate position in synthetic biology and biosynthetic gene cluster expression within the EU-funded AIMARIA project (Accelerating Innovation in Marine AI-Powered Bioprospecting).
The project sits at the interface of molecular biology, microbiology, microbial genetics, biotechnology, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence. The research focuses on refactoring and heterologous expression of biosynthetic gene clusters, with work on regulatory DNA elements, promoter and 5′ UTR design, microbial host selection, and AI-supported design–build–test–learn workflows. The successful candidate will work with the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science in Trondheim, Norway, and collaborate with partners in the AIMARIA consortium.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as synthetic biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, or biochemical engineering; practical lab experience in molecular biology/microbiology/genetic engineering; strong English skills; and a solid academic record (B or better on NTNU’s scale, or equivalent). Master’s students may apply if they complete and document the degree before starting, no later than 2027-01-01.

What's required
A master’s degree or equivalent in synthetic biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, or another relevant field is required. Applicants need practical laboratory experience in molecular biology, microbiology, genetic engineering, or related experimental methods, plus the ability to analyse, interpret, and clearly document experimental results. Excellent written and oral English is required. Candidates must meet NTNU doctoral admission requirements, have a strong academic background relevant to molecular biology, microbial genetics, or synthetic biology, and an average grade of B or better on NTNU’s scale (or equivalent).
