About this position
Leiden University’s Faculty of Science and the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) invite applications for a PhD position focused on the development of anticancer nanomedicines. This project is part of the NanoMed NL consortium, which brings together Dutch academic and industry partners to advance nanomedicine research and its societal impact. The successful candidate will work in the Barz lab, developing polypept(o)ide-based nanomedicines to enhance current cancer therapies.
The research involves synthesizing functional amino acids, performing solid phase peptide synthesis, and utilizing NCA/NNCA polymerization to create precision polymers. These polymers will be used to construct functional nanomedicines, with anticancer drugs covalently attached via disease-responsive bonds. The efficacy of these systems will be evaluated and compared to conventional antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) within the consortium.
The position offers a stimulating, international research environment in the heart of the Bio Science Park, with access to advanced training and career development opportunities. The appointment is for four years, with a competitive salary and benefits package, including holiday and end-of-year bonuses, and support for international candidates. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in organic chemistry, (bio)pharmacy, or polymer science, with strong synthetic chemistry skills and experience in peptide synthesis or NCA polymerization.
The application process includes submission of a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and reference letters, with interviews and a writing assessment for shortlisted candidates. The deadline for applications is 15 November 2025.
