Leiden University

PhD candidate in the Development of Anticancer Nanomedicines

This PhD position at Leiden University is focused on the development of anticancer nanomedicines within the Faculty of Science and the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR). The project is part of the NanoMed NL consortium, a collaborative effort among Dutch stakeholders to advance nanomedicine research, integrating fundamental science with the creation of novel therapies for cancer and gene therapies for metabolic disorders. The successful candidate will join the Barz lab, where they will develop polypept(o)ide-based nanomedicines aimed at improving current cancer therapies. The research involves synthesizing functional amino acids, performing solid phase peptide synthesis, and polymerizing N-carboxyanhydrides to produce precision polymers. These polymers will serve as the foundation for constructing functional nanomedicines, with anticancer drugs covalently attached via disease-responsive bonds. The efficacy of these new systems will be evaluated and compared to conventional antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) within the consortium. The position offers a stimulating and international research environment located in the heart of the Bio Science Park, with access to advanced training and career development opportunities. The appointment is for four years and includes a competitive salary, holiday and end-of-year bonuses, and support for international candidates, such as a substantial tax break and attractive secondary employment terms. Applicants should possess a strong background in synthetic chemistry, ideally with experience in peptide synthesis, NCA polymerization, or synthetic organic chemistry, and must hold a relevant master's degree. The application process requires submission of a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and reference letters, followed by an interview and a writing assessment. Leiden University values diversity and inclusion, striving to create a supportive and collaborative academic community.

Leiden University

PhD Candidate in the Development of Anticancer Nanomedicines

Leiden University’s Faculty of Science and the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) invite applications for a PhD position focused on the development of anticancer nanomedicines. This project is part of the NanoMed NL consortium, which brings together Dutch academic and industry partners to advance nanomedicine research and its societal impact. The successful candidate will work in the Barz lab, developing polypept(o)ide-based nanomedicines to enhance current cancer therapies. The research involves synthesizing functional amino acids, performing solid phase peptide synthesis, and utilizing NCA/NNCA polymerization to create precision polymers. These polymers will be used to construct functional nanomedicines, with anticancer drugs covalently attached via disease-responsive bonds. The efficacy of these systems will be evaluated and compared to conventional antibody drug conjugates (ADCs) within the consortium. The position offers a stimulating, international research environment in the heart of the Bio Science Park, with access to advanced training and career development opportunities. The appointment is for four years, with a competitive salary and benefits package, including holiday and end-of-year bonuses, and support for international candidates. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in organic chemistry, (bio)pharmacy, or polymer science, with strong synthetic chemistry skills and experience in peptide synthesis or NCA polymerization. The application process includes submission of a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and reference letters, with interviews and a writing assessment for shortlisted candidates. The deadline for applications is 15 November 2025.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Peptide Binder Discovery and Synthetic Antibodies at Leiden University

Leiden University is advertising a postdoctoral position for the development of synthetic antibodies , focused on peptide binder discovery at the interface of peptide therapeutics , nanomedicine , and therapeutic antibodies . The project is a collaboration between the Barz Lab and the Pomplun Lab at Leiden University , within the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR). It is funded by the prestigious NWO VICI grant awarded to Prof. Matthias Barz. The successful candidate will discover and develop high-affinity peptide binders for therapeutically relevant receptors, establish robust peptide discovery workflows, and develop bioconjugation methods for attaching peptides to defined nanoparticles. Applicants should hold a PhD in peptide discovery and have a strong background in display technologies (phage or mRNA display) or generative computational design , ideally both. Peptide synthesis experience and computational skills are appreciated. The role also calls for a strong publication record, creativity, scientific curiosity, interdisciplinary teamwork, and excellent English communication skills. The appointment is full-time for up to two years , with an initial 12-month contract and the possibility of extension. Salary is listed at €3,546–€5,538 gross per month depending on experience.
