About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Vocal Biomarkers: Acoustics of the Voice for Health Applications at the Department of Electronic Systems in Trondheim, Norway.

The project sits in the Acoustics group and the interdisciplinary Connection research environment, focusing on how subtle acoustic features of the voice can be used as non-invasive indicators of health. The work combines acoustics, signal processing, physical and numerical modelling, and clinical/biomedical applications. Research tasks include recording, analysing and processing voice and speech signals, developing voice-production models, and linking acoustic features to underlying physiology and physics.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need a relevant Master’s degree in acoustics, signal processing, physics, mathematics, computer science, or another technical/quantitative field; the degree must be completed before starting. A strong background in mathematics or physics, good programming skills (Python or MATLAB), eligibility for admission to the PhD programme in Electronics and Telecommunication, strong academic results, and good English are required. Experience with speech/voice processing, modelling and simulation, and health/clinical data is preferred.

Funding and conditions: this is a salaried PhD position, normally NOK 550,800 gross per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The appointment is for 3 years, with up to 1 additional year for career-promoting work. NTNU also mentions working capital for the project and standard employee benefits.

Application window: deadline is 1 September 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge and include transcripts and diplomas, CV, thesis copy or draft, motivation letter, relevant publications/research work, certificates if any, and contact details for at least two referees. If education was completed abroad, additional documentation of scope/quality and diploma supplement may be required.

Supervisor: the main supervisor is Associate Professor Sara R. Martín ([email protected]).
