About this position
PhD Fellow in Pharmacoepidemiology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway
The Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences at UiT in Tromsø is offering a three-year PhD fellowship in pharmacoepidemiology within the Research group for Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacoepidemiology (IPSUM). The position is embedded in the project Using Tromsø Study Data to Advance Community Pharmacy Practice, which aims to improve medication therapy from both individual and public health perspectives.
The PhD project uses data from the Tromsø Study linked with the Norwegian Prescribed Drug Registry to study medication use, patient information needs, and the role of pharmacy services. The candidate will investigate: satisfaction with medication information provided by pharmacies, including factors associated with satisfaction or dissatisfaction; agreement between patients and pharmacists on the single most important medication; and general views and attitudes toward medicine use in the Norwegian population. The study population is expected to include around 10,000 Tromsø Study participants who report using medications.
This is a strong opportunity for applicants interested in pharmacoepidemiology, social pharmacy, registry-based research, medication adherence and beliefs, community pharmacy practice, and health data analysis. The position is research training leading to a doctoral degree, and the final project description will be developed together with the supervisors. Applicants must submit a short project sketch of up to 800 words outlining the topic, research questions, methods, and methodological rationale.
Eligibility requirements include a master’s degree or equivalent in pharmacy, health professions, health informatics, or a related field; a thesis in social pharmacy, pharmacoepidemiology, epidemiology, or informatics using health data is preferred/required. Admission to the PhD programme at UiT’s Faculty of Health Sciences is mandatory. Applicants must have at least a C grade on the master’s thesis and a C average or better overall, and must document English proficiency. Near-complete master’s students may apply if they can provide evidence of imminent completion.
The fellowship is full-time and temporary for three years, with a typical salary of 580,000 NOK per year plus a 3% annual increase, and membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. UiT also highlights flexible working hours, a good academic environment, and career development opportunities. The application deadline is 8 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Oslo), and applications must be submitted via Jobbnorge with all required supporting documents.
