About this position

Nord University is advertising a three-year PhD position in modelling state shifts and transient population dynamics of iconic alpine birds, based in the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture and affiliated with the Ecology Research Division.

The project focuses on alpine ecosystems, population ecology, and how climate change and other environmental perturbations influence state-dependent dynamics in bird populations. The successful candidate will work with extensive long-term field data from alpine ecosystems in Norway, using advanced statistical modelling and mathematical modelling to study demographic and environmental transitions, with the willow ptarmigan as the model species. Some fieldwork in remote alpine environments is expected.

The position is located in Steinkjer, Trøndelag, Norway, and is scheduled to start on 1 January 2027 or by mutual agreement. The annual salary for doctoral researchers is NOK 565,000.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in ecology or a closely related field; an overall grade average of B or better (ECTS) for both the degree and thesis; admission to the PhD programme in Biosciences; and good written and spoken English. Preferred experience includes population ecology, natural resource management, R, mathematical/statistical modelling, and willingness to do fieldwork.

How to apply: submit the application electronically by 2026-09-04. Include a motivation letter, CV, diplomas and certificates, authorized translations if needed, HK-dir approval if applicable, master’s thesis, and contact details for 1–3 references. All documents must be uploaded as PDF attachments.
