About this position
Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) is advertising a PhD fellowship in analogue quantum computing within the Department of Computer Science in Oslo, Norway. The position is part of the newly established Norwegian Quantum Software Centre (NorQSoft) and the OsloMet Quantum Hub, with research collaboration involving OsloMet, Simula Research Laboratory, and other NorQSoft partners.
The project focuses on analogue quantum computing, including adiabatic quantum computing, quantum annealing, and related continuous-time approaches. Research themes include solving hard optimization problems, studying noise and decoherence in NISQ hardware, exploring how decoherence may be exploited in quantum annealing, and comparing digital and continuous-time implementations of QAOA. Classical simulation, quantum software, and possible experiments on quantum hardware are part of the research direction.
This is a paid PhD fellowship with a salary of 550,800 NOK per year. The appointment can be either 3 years at 100% research or 4 years at 75% research plus 25% career-advancing work. The workplace is at Pilestredet campus, Oslo.
Eligibility highlights include a relevant master’s degree in physics, mathematics, or computer science, strong grades, admission to a relevant doctoral programme, English proficiency, and programming/scientific computing skills (Python, C++, Julia, MATLAB or similar). Helpful background includes quantum physics, quantum computing, dynamical quantum simulation, Qiskit, and high-performance computing.
The deadline is 6 November 2026. Apply via OsloMet’s recruitment system and upload the required documents: motivation letter, CV, references, degree certificates, master’s thesis, and any relevant publications or presentations. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

What's required
Relevant master's degree with average grade B or better, including at least a B on the master's thesis, and a bachelor's degree with average grade C or better. The degree should be in physics, mathematics, or computer science and normally include 120 ECTS credits. If the master's degree has fewer than 120 ECTS credits, the applicant must document eligibility for doctoral studies in the country where it was awarded. Applicants must have an academic profile aligned with the research group, written and oral English proficiency, familiarity with scientific computing and programming in Python, C++, Julia, MATLAB or similar, and admission to a relevant doctoral programme. Advantageous qualifications include quantum physics and quantum computing, simulation of dynamical quantum systems, adiabatic quantum computing and quantum annealing, Qiskit or similar quantum software, and cluster-based simulation or high-performance computing.
How to apply
Apply through OsloMet’s electronic recruitment system by the deadline. Upload an application letter, CV, reference letters, certificates/diplomas for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, approval for non-Norwegian education if relevant, master’s thesis, scientific works or article links if relevant, publication/presentation list if relevant, and preferably two references with contact information.
