About this position

Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet), Norway, is advertising a PhD fellowship in quantum computing and optimization on noisy gate-based NISQ platforms. The position is based in the Department of Computer Science and is part of the newly established Norwegian Quantum Software Centre (NorQSoft) and the OsloMet Quantum Hub.

The project focuses on how optimization and data-analysis tasks can be formulated and run on current noisy intermediate-scale quantum hardware. Research topics include quantum algorithms such as QAOA, variational quantum circuits, quantum reservoir computing, decoherence, gate imperfections, measurement noise, cloud-based quantum computation, and cluster-based classical simulation. The goal is to identify methods and design principles that remain useful on present-day NISQ devices.

This is a research-intensive PhD fellowship with close collaboration between the main supervisors, OsloMet staff, Simula Research Laboratory, and other NorQSoft members. The successful candidate is expected to publish research, present at international conferences and workshops, and contribute to quantum-computing-related activities such as seminars and outreach.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant master’s degree in theoretical physics, computer science, or mathematics; strong grades; admission to a relevant doctoral programme; English proficiency; and programming/scientific computing skills in Python, C++, Julia, MATLAB, or similar. Helpful experience includes quantum physics, quantum annealing, Qiskit, dynamical quantum systems, and high-performance computing.

The position can be structured as either a 3-year PhD with 100% research or a 4-year PhD with 75% research and 25% career-advancing work. Salary is listed as 550,800 NOK per year. The workplace is at Pilestredet campus in Oslo, with a possible later move to Lillestrøm.

Applications must be submitted through OsloMet’s recruitment system by 2026-11-06. Required documents include a motivation letter, CV, certificates/diplomas, master’s thesis, relevant publications or article links, and references.

What's required

Relevant master’s degree with average grade B or better and a minimum grade B on the master’s thesis, plus a bachelor’s degree with average grade C or better. The degree should normally be in theoretical physics, computer science, or mathematics and include 120 ECTS credits. If the master’s degree has fewer than 120 ECTS credits, the applicant must document eligibility for doctoral studies in the country where it was awarded. Applicants must have an academic profile aligned with the research group, written and oral English proficiency, familiarity with scientific computing, and programming in Python, C++, Julia, MATLAB or similar. Admission to a relevant doctoral programme is required. Advantages include familiarity with quantum physics and quantum computing, adiabatic quantum computing and quantum annealing, Qiskit or similar quantum software, dynamical quantum system simulation, and cluster-based simulation or high-performance computing.

How to apply

Apply through OsloMet’s electronic recruitment system. Upload a motivation letter, CV, reference letters, all pages of bachelor’s and master’s certificates/diplomas, approved documentation for non-Norwegian education if applicable, master’s thesis, relevant scientific works or article links, publication/presentation list if relevant, and preferably two references. Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered.
