PhD Fellowship in Geochronology and Mineralogy (U-Pb Geochronology, Detrital Zircons) University of Copenhagen in Denmark

University of Copenhagen is advertising a PhD fellowship in geochronology and mineralogy with a focus on detrital zircons and heavy minerals. The project sits within the research theme “Testing the veracity of detrital zircon” and is financed by the Independent Research Fund of Denmark.

The PhD project will involve characterising heavy mineral populations, including U-Pb ages of zircons from metasedimentary source rocks and modern detrital sediments. The work is embedded in the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN), Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, and is linked to the Hard Rock group with strengths in geochemistry, mineralogy, and petrology. Available facilities include electron microprobe, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, laser ablation ICP-MS, and thermal ionization mass spectrometry.

Supervisor: Professor Tod Waight (principal supervisor). The project also mentions collaboration with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and the University of Aarhus.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a two-year Master’s degree in geoscience or an equivalent qualification related to the project. A background or strong interest in mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and geoscience is expected. Experience with geochronology, especially U-Pb, and statistical methods is advantageous. Good language skills are required.

Funding and duration: This is a full-time PhD fellowship for up to 3 years. Employment is conditional on enrolment in the PhD School at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. No stipend amount is stated in the post.
