About this position
PhD project at the University of Southampton in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, hosted within the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Propulsion Systems Noise.
This research focuses on aeroacoustics, acoustic mode detection, microphone arrays, and beamforming for characterising sound fields measured inside and outside aeroengines. The project aims to design, build, and test custom in-duct and on-wall wind tunnel microphone arrays and develop algorithms to reconstruct true source levels and far-field directivity for Rolls-Royce’s next-generation ultra-high-bypass-ratio turbofan aeroengine.
You will work on challenging problems in sensor design, calibration, data streaming, signal quality assessment, and signal processing under decorrelating effects such as reverberation and turbulent flow-acoustic interaction. The project offers close collaboration with the global Rolls-Royce noise engineering team in the UK and Germany, access to specialist facilities, a vibrant postgraduate community, and opportunities to attend conferences, workshops, and training events.
Funding: Competition funded. Degree: Doctor of Philosophy. Entry requirement: 2:1 honours degree. Deadline: 31 Jan 2027.
