About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in high-fidelity CFD for fan/OGVs broadband noise modelling, hosted in the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Propulsion Systems Noise at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR).
This project focuses on aeroacoustics, computational fluid dynamics, fluid mechanics, and mathematical modelling for Ultra High Bypass Ratio (UHBR) aeroengines. The research will use Large Eddy Simulation (LES) or Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) to study fan wake turbulence interacting with outlet guide vanes (OGVs), with the goal of identifying the turbulence statistics that most strongly influence broadband noise generation.
You will characterise wake turbulence in terms of turbulence intensity, integral length scales, velocity spectra, and spatial coherence, then analyse unsteady OGV loading and acoustic response across frequencies and duct modes. The findings will be used to improve semi-analytical engineering models for future aeroengine design.
The project is jointly funded by Rolls-Royce and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Sound Futures. Funding support may include fee coverage and stipend support for top-ranked applicants, with additional fee-waiver routes mentioned for qualifying students. The project is open to students worldwide.
Entry requirements: a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in engineering, mathematics, physics, or a closely related discipline. Helpful experience includes CFD, turbomachinery/internal flows, scale-resolving turbulence modelling, and statistical data analysis. BPSS checks are required before appointment.
How to apply: submit an online application for the Research programme (2027/28), Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and search for PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175). Add the supervisor name in section 2 and upload your CV, two references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed. For questions, contact the doctoral admissions email or Dr Long Wu.
Deadline: 2027-09-01, with funding awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is recommended.

What's required
A UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in engineering, mathematics, physics, or a closely related discipline. Desirable experience includes computational fluid dynamics, ideally for turbomachinery or other internal flows, knowledge of scale-resolving turbulence modelling such as LES or DES, and experience in data analysis, particularly statistical analysis of large datasets. Applicants must also agree to BPSS checks and follow standard working procedures within the Rolls-Royce UTC.
How to apply
Apply online for the Research programme for 2027/28 in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Select full-time or part-time, search for PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Include your CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and English language qualification if applicable.
