About this position
PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in Acoustic Performance of Timber Structure Connections.
This joint PhD project between TU/e and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is part of the EuroTech Universities PhD programme and focuses on building acoustics, timber structures, sound transmission, vibro-acoustics, structural dynamics, and numerical modelling. The research aims to improve prediction methods for acoustic performance in lightweight timber buildings, especially the role of structural connections such as screws, nails, steel brackets, and adhesive joints.
You will investigate how connection types and layouts influence sound transmission, develop efficient numerical simulation methods, and quantify uncertainty caused by construction variability. The project is based in the Building Acoustics research group in the Department of the Built Environment at TU/e, with about six months spent at DTU’s Acoustic Technology group in Denmark.
Supervision: dr.ir. Cédric Van hoorickx (assistant professor, TU/e) and dr.ir. Jonas Brunskog (DTU).
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or equivalent in acoustics, building physics, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field; research-oriented mindset; willingness to develop teaching skills and coach students; fluent English at C1 level. Helpful experience includes building acoustics, vibro-acoustics, structural dynamics, computational methods, and publications/scientific communication.
Funding and conditions: full-time 4-year PhD employment, salary scale P (€3,204–€4,051 gross/month), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. Additional benefits include pension, leave, training, commuting/work-from-home support, and international staff assistance.
Application: submit a complete online application with cover letter, CV, publication list, three references, and BSc/MSc diplomas and transcripts. The vacancy remains open until filled.
