About this position
PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands on continuum two-phase flow modelling of piping in dikes and internal erosion.
The project sits in the Offshore and Dredging Engineering group within the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The research aims to improve prediction of pipe formation and progression in clay-sand layered dikes by connecting fundamental fluid-soil interaction physics with computational modelling for safer flood defence systems.
You will develop continuum-based two-phase models, derive constitutive modelling approaches from high-fidelity DNS-DEM data, and explore multi-scale modelling strategies including adaptive mesh refinement. The work is strongly interdisciplinary and combines multiphase flow physics, numerical methods, computational fluid dynamics, and civil/flood engineering applications.
Eligibility highlights: an MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, Process Technology, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field; training in multiphase flow physics and CFD; excellent English; and interest in teaching/guiding MSc students. Experience with Euler–Euler multiphase modelling or mesh adaptation is an advantage.
Funding and conditions: 4-year doctoral employment in principle, with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and relocation support.
Deadline: 25 October 2026. Apply online with a cover letter, CV, thesis summary, and course/grade lists.

What's required
Applicants must have an MSc degree in a relevant field such as Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, Process Technology, Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Required background includes training in multiphase flow physics, numerical methods, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), ideally supported by MSc thesis, research projects, or internships. Strong English communication skills are required, along with the ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment and an affinity for teaching and guiding MSc students. Experience with Euler–Euler multiphase flow modelling and/or automatic mesh adaptation is an advantage.
