About this position

PhD opportunity at Nanyang Technological University (School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering), Singapore. This project is titled Adaptive Indoor Soundscape Augmentation and focuses on using artificial intelligence to improve the acoustic environment of open-plan offices and other indoor spaces.

The research aims to develop an Adaptive Indoor Soundscape Augmentation (AISA) system that combines privacy-preserving sensors, edge-based sound classification, and AI-driven soundscape generation. The system is intended to respond intelligently to office activities such as meetings, focused work, phone calls, and HVAC noise, with the broader goal of reducing distraction, supporting concentration, and improving well-being.

This is an interdisciplinary project spanning acoustic engineering, artificial intelligence, psychoacoustics, human-centred design, signal processing, and electrical/electronic engineering. Potential applications include offices, healthcare, education, and future hybrid workplaces.

Supervisor: Prof Woon Seng Gan at Nanyang Technological University.

Funding: Funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Eligibility highlights: strong background in acoustics, signal processing, audio engineering, or a related discipline; experience with audio signal processing, machine learning, deep learning, embedded/edge AI, psychoacoustics, or human-computer interaction is highly valued; applicants should be comfortable with Python, audio data, human-participant experiments, and analysis of acoustic and user-response data.

Application: applications are accepted all year round. Interested candidates should register their interest via the FindAPhD enquiry form and wait for the university to respond directly.
