About this position

PhD opportunity at KU Leuven in additive manufacturing of ceramics for small-scale turbomachinery.

This fully funded, four-year doctoral position is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network TURBO-IMPACT (Horizon Europe). The research is hosted by the Advanced Ceramics and Powder Metallurgy team in the Department of Materials Engineering at KU Leuven in Leuven, Belgium.

The project focuses on the complete indirect DLP/SLA additive manufacturing route for silicon nitride (Si3N4) turbomachinery components. The PhD researcher will develop a UV-curable Si3N4 slurry, optimize printing strategies for reference parts and complex impellers, and study debinding and sintering to produce fully dense near-net-shaped ceramic components. The work also includes microstructural, mechanical, and geometrical characterization, plus correlations between processing, microstructure, and properties.

Possible secondments are mentioned at EPFL (Switzerland), Admatec Additive Solutions (The Netherlands), and IFW (Germany).

Eligibility highlights: a two-year master’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or an equivalent degree; strong English; basic experience or strong interest in ceramics processing, additive manufacturing, and characterization; good grades; and compliance with the MSCA mobility rule and doctoral-candidate requirements.

Funding: competitive MSCA salary, mobility and family allowances where applicable, full social security coverage, paid leave, and doctoral training through KU Leuven’s Arenberg Doctoral School.

Deadline: 30 November 2026.
