About this position

PhD vacancy at Ghent University in Advanced Analytical Chemistry, within the PFAROS project and the Laboratory for Chemical Technology (LCT). The project targets challenging analytical problems in the circular economy, especially the characterization of contaminants in plastic recycling streams such as pyrolysis oils, process gases, and aqueous condensates.

The research is method-development driven and focuses on chromatography and mass spectrometry, including GC, GC×GC, HPLC, LC×LC, element-selective detection, high-resolution mass spectrometry, PFAS analytical workflows, non-target screening, and structure elucidation. The aim is to identify halogenated and oxygenated contaminants, quantify them, and assess implications for product safety.

Ideal candidates should have a strong background in mass spectrometric structure elucidation, chromatography, complex sample analysis, and critical interpretation of analytical data. Experience with GC×GC or LC×LC is a plus, but not required.

Supervision is by Prof. Kevin Van Geem, Prof. Frederic Lynen, and Dr. Robin Varghese. The position is located in Ghent, Belgium, starts on 01/01/2027, and lasts 4 years. A TOEFL score (or equivalent above 100) is required.
