About this position
DTU Chemical Engineering is inviting applications for a PhD student in anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass and lignin valorization at the Technical University of Denmark in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.
The project sits in the Bioconversions group and combines microbial ecology, bioprocess development, bioreactor experiments, bioinformatics, and metabolic modeling. The research will monitor anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic biomass, study microbial abundance and interactions under different operational conditions, and explore ways to valorize lignin for process enhancement or new materials.
The role is cross-disciplinary and includes reactor operation, wet-lab and analytical protocol development, high-throughput testing on microbial cultures, computational tools, and chemical/biological process testing. The group emphasizes collaboration with academic and industrial partners in Denmark and abroad.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc degree in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or a closely related field. Experience in bioinformatics, fermentations, reactor operation, and anaerobic digestion metabolite analysis (GC) is valued, along with strong writing and communication skills and the ability to work independently and in teams.
Funding and terms: this is a 3-year PhD scholarship/appointment under DTU salary terms and the Danish collective agreement. The position is subject to academic approval and enrolment in a DTU PhD programme.
Application deadline: 8 September 2026, 23:59 Danish time. Apply online and upload one PDF containing a cover letter, CV, transcripts, BSc/MSc diploma, grading scale description, and publications list if relevant.
