About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Bath in the Department of Life Sciences on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), plasmids, gene duplications, plasmid copy number, genomics, experimental evolution, microbiology, genetics, applied statistics, and mathematical modelling.
This project is part of the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme (DLP), which offers up to 17 studentships for entry in September 2027. The work combines large-scale genomic surveillance data from hospital bloodstream infections with experimental evolution to study how pathogens adapt and how resistance genes spread.
Supervisory team: Dr William Matlock (University of Bath), Prof Tiffany Taylor (University of Bath), Dr Sion Bayliss (University of Bristol), and Dr Catherine Tooke (University of Bath).
Funding covers tuition fees, a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/27 (updated annually), and up to £5,000 per annum for research training and support, subject to project requirements. Home and international students may apply, though international awards are capped at 30% and do not cover visa, healthcare surcharge, or relocation costs.
Eligibility: applicants should hold, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in medical sciences, computing, mathematics, or the physical sciences. A lower second-class degree may be considered with a Merit or above at master's level. Non-UK applicants must meet University of Bath English language requirements.
Deadline: 21 October 2026 at 17:00 GMT. Applications are submitted directly through the GW4 BioMed3 DLP online application form; you may apply for up to two projects and only one application per candidate. Do not apply to Bath at this stage unless you later receive an offer of funding.
