About this position
PhD opportunity in applied nuclear physics at Lund University, Sweden. The Nuclear Structure Group in the Division of Particle and Nuclear Physics is recruiting one doctoral student to develop a next-generation device for identifying unknown radioactive sources and monitoring the environment. The project, titled From Lundium to L.U.N.D.I.U.M., combines applied nuclear physics, radiation safety, emergency preparedness, nuclear forensics, environmental monitoring, detector development, Monte Carlo simulation, Geant4, data acquisition, and data analysis.
The research aims to upcycle state-of-the-art detector components originally used in nuclear structure studies into a high-granularity system with alpha-beta-gamma resolving capabilities. The work is interdisciplinary and includes collaboration with the Biospheric and Anthropogenic Radioactivity group for sample collection and preparation, as well as interaction with researchers at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.
Typical duties include optimizing detector geometry through Monte Carlo simulations, coordinating mechanical construction, developing the data acquisition system and analysis framework, validating measurements with simulated contamination samples from the IAEA, and developing methods to analyse radioactive aerosols from environmental samples. The position also includes up to 20% teaching and departmental duties.
Eligibility requires at least 45 second-cycle credits in physics, engineering physics, or an associated field, or a relevant master’s degree, plus at least 60 credits directly relevant to the PhD education. Strong independence, communication, collaboration, and very good English are required. Helpful experience includes radiation detectors, multi-parameter DAQ systems, object-oriented programming, environmental radioactivity, radioecology, radionuclide production, ionizing radiation detection, and Monte Carlo radiation transport codes.
The employment is a temporary full-time doctoral position at Lund University, starting no earlier than 1 January 2027. Applications must be submitted in English and include a CV, cover letter, degree/study certificates, and any additional supporting documents. The last application date is 20 November 2026.
