About this position
Uppsala University is recruiting a PhD student in experimental nuclear physics with a focus on neutron-induced reactions. The position is based at the Department of Physics and Astronomy in Uppsala, Sweden, within the Division of Applied Nuclear Physics.
The project investigates the competition between reaction mechanisms in neutron-induced reactions, with emphasis on the transition from compound-nucleus behaviour to pre-equilibrium and direct-reaction dynamics. The work combines experimental nuclear physics, radiation detection, data analysis, nuclear-reaction modelling, and scientific computing.
The doctoral student will conduct a substantial part of the experimental work at GANIL in Caen, France, using the NFS (Neutrons for Science) facility and the Medley experimental setup. Tasks include simulation, preparation, optimisation, and development of the setup; participation in measurement campaigns; analysis of experimental data; and comparison with model calculations using codes such as TALYS.
The research aims to produce high-precision nuclear data, including cross-sections and energy/angular distributions of emitted light ions, with applications in nuclear-energy systems, structural materials, cancer treatment, radiation-tolerant microelectronics, and other radiation-based technologies.
Eligibility: a Master’s degree in physics, engineering physics, nuclear engineering, applied physics, or a closely related area, or equivalent academic preparation. Applicants should have strong physics knowledge, some programming experience (e.g. Python, C++), good English communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with ROOT, Geant4/FLUKA/OpenMC, TALYS, detector electronics, data acquisition, theoretical modelling, or HPC is considered a merit.
Funding: temporary full-time doctoral employment at Uppsala University. No stipend amount is listed.
Deadline: 30 October 2026 at 22:59 UTC. The application is submitted via the Uppsala University Varbi portal.
