About this position

PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) on assessing private climate change adaptation effectiveness and limits.

This project is part of the European ADELE initiative and focuses on policy-relevant research on climate change adaptation, especially the effectiveness of private household adaptation across different European contexts. The work combines survey development, data analysis, and agent-based modeling (ABM) to study how households adapt to climate-induced hazards and when adaptation reaches soft or hard limits.

The PhD candidate will spend roughly 70% of the time on large-scale household survey design and ex-post assessment, and about 30% on ex-ante modeling. Research topics include adaptation to heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, floods, and sea level rise, as well as behavioral, economic, social, and institutional constraints such as income differences, risk awareness, self-efficacy, and social norms. The modeling component will use existing TU Delft ABMs such as EMERGO, CRAB, and FAST.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Environmental Economics, Psychology, Complex Systems, Engineering & Policy Analysis, or a related field. Experience with statistical analysis, survey research, and either ABM or programming in Python/Julia is preferred. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and fluent English are required.

This is a 4-year PhD employment with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The position is based at TU Delft in the Faculty of Technology, Policy & Management and is funded through the EU Horizon project ADELE.

Apply online by 31 August 2026. Submit a motivation letter, CV, and a list of publications or software outputs if applicable. Applications by email are not accepted.
