About this position
Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD position in Atmospheric Sciences within the Meteorology and Air Quality (MAQ) Group at the Netherlands-based Wageningen campus. The project focuses on emerging extreme fire weather risks, with an emphasis on how climate extremes and wildfire risk interact in a warming world.
The PhD researcher will investigate the most intense, persistent, and impactful fire weather conditions possible under the current climate and compare them with future conditions under climate warming. The work includes analysis of historical extreme events and state-of-the-art climate modelling experiments, with attention to the atmospheric and climatic mechanisms that drive fire weather and how these relate to fire occurrence and behaviour.
Supervision is provided by Dr. Laura Suarez-Gutierrez in collaboration with Prof. Guido van der Werf. The position is embedded in a multidisciplinary research environment with expertise in weather and climate extremes, fire dynamics, and their interactions.
Applicants should have an MSc degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, climate sciences, physics, engineering, or a related field. The post also asks for strong motivation, independence, teamwork, experience with large datasets (weather, climate model, and/or satellite data), and programming skills such as Python and shell scripting. Prior experience in climate extremes, fire risk, atmospheric/climate dynamics, or climate modelling is considered an advantage. English proficiency at C1 level is expected.
Funding includes a fully funded PhD appointment with a gross salary starting at €3,204 per month in year one and rising to €4,051 per month in year four, based on a 38-hour work week. The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration if performance is satisfactory.
To apply, candidates must use the vacancy page on the WUR website and submit a CV (max 2 pages), a motivation letter (max 1 page), and the mandatory online form. The deadline is 30 October 2026.
