About this position
PhD opening at the Instituto de Geociencias (IGEO, CSIC–UCM) in Madrid, Spain, within the Physics of Climate and Climate Change group and the STREAM research group at Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
The project, ADAPT-X – AI-Driven AnticiPated aTtribution of eXtreme events, focuses on AI-based weather prediction, climate change attribution, extreme events, and the evaluation of machine-learning weather models for heatwaves, heavy precipitation, droughts, and severe storms. The PhD researcher will study predictive skill, atmospheric processes, factual and counterfactual forecast experiments, and compare AI-based attribution with physics-based numerical weather prediction.
This is a 4-year full-time PhD position starting in Spring 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary is approximately €1,655 net per month, with full Spanish Social Security coverage and standard employee benefits. The project also offers access to GPU and high-performance computing resources and opportunities for international collaboration and research stays.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree (or near completion) in atmospheric sciences, meteorology, climate science, physics, applied mathematics, environmental sciences, computer science, data science, or a related quantitative field; strong Python/scientific programming skills; good English; and a strong quantitative background. Experience with atmospheric dynamics, numerical modelling, machine learning, or large meteorological datasets is advantageous.
Apply by email with a single PDF including CV, motivation letter, transcripts, and two referees’ contact details. Deadline: 31 December 2026 (applications may be considered after this date until filled).
