About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD in Behavioural and Economic Modelling To Support Systems-Based Pest Risk Management.

The project sits at the intersection of behavioural science, agricultural economics, and agricultural systems modelling. It focuses on how human behaviour, economic incentives, and policy instruments shape pest risk management decisions across European agri-food value chains. The research will contribute to modelling tools that integrate behavioural insights into bio-economic models for cost-effective and sustainable phytosanitary strategies.

The PhD is embedded in the EU Horizon Europe project PhytoPRISM, a multidisciplinary consortium involving 15 research partners from 7 EU countries. The work will be carried out in the Business Economics (BEC) group at Wageningen University, led by Prof. Alfons Oude Lansink, with contact also listed for Monique Mourits.

Applicants should have a recently obtained Master’s degree in (agricultural) economics or a similar field, strong quantitative skills, and an interest in statistical modelling or simulation. Experience with R, STATA, Python, behavioural research, or systems modelling is an advantage. A strong command of English (C1 or equivalent) is required.

Funding includes a fully funded PhD appointment with a salary starting at €3,059/month in year 1 and rising to €3,881/month in year 4, plus standard Dutch university employment benefits. The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration if performance is good.
