About this position
Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD on impact evaluation of climate policies in agricultural and forest landscapes. The project is part of the EU-Horizon initiative PolicyForClimate and focuses on how climate mitigation and adaptation policies affect land use, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity in agriculture and forestry.
The PhD will be based at the Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group (FNP) at Wageningen University, with joint supervision by Dr. Jorge Sellare, Prof. Bas Arts, and Dr. Dario Schulz (European Forest Institute). The research combines mixed methods, including econometric impact evaluation, qualitative participatory approaches, systematic reviews, workshops, focus groups, farm-level data, and spatial analysis.
Applicants should have an MSc in agricultural economics, environmental economics, environmental policy, forestry, or a closely related field. Strong interest in climate policy, causal inference, and the links between policy, land cover, carbon, and biodiversity is important. Skills in R, Stata, Python, and GIS/spatial data analysis are desirable. Because fieldwork in Spain is a key part of the project, Spanish at B2 or higher is required, and English at C1 level is expected.
The position starts in February 2027. The salary is listed as €3,204 per month in year 1, rising to €4,051 per month in year 4, with a temporary contract for 18 months that may be extended for the project duration. Applications must be submitted via the WUR vacancy page, and candidates must also complete the mandatory online form. The deadline is 2026-11-04.
