About this position
PhD opportunity in biogeography, mycology, microbial ecology, and plant-microbe interactions at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen, the Netherlands, with collaboration through the Galapagos Microbiome Initiative at the University of San Francisco de Quito (USFQ).
The project will investigate the hidden diversity and biogeographic patterns of fungi associated with Scalesia species in the Galápagos Islands, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), yeasts, and fungal pathogens in soils, roots, and leaves. The research combines molecular and microbiology methods, bioinformatics, statistical analyses, field sampling, and greenhouse experiments to understand how fungal communities shape plant success, dominance, competitive ability, and resilience.
This is a fully funded 4-year PhD position with a preferred start date of 1 January 2027. The appointment starts for one year and can be extended for three more years after a positive evaluation. Salary is listed at €3,204–€4,051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension support, and commuting benefits.
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in microbial ecology, plant-soil-microbe interactions, or a related field. The ideal candidate has experience with both experimental and computational approaches, a strong interest in mycology and ecosystem ecology, and the ability to work collaboratively with European and Ecuadorian partners. Strong English communication skills are required, and Spanish proficiency or motivation to learn Spanish is preferred.
To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, and contact details of two professional referees. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The deadline is 4 November 2026.
