About this position
Wageningen University & Research is recruiting a PhD candidate for a project on green façades, urban biodiversity, ecology, and building insulation. The BIO-SKIN project (Bio-Inspired Outer Surfaces to Kool, Insulate and Nurture) develops bio-based, waste-derived, circular façade systems that integrate plant growth to keep buildings cool, improve insulation, support biodiversity, and contribute to more sustainable urban environments.
The PhD research will focus on how plant-soil-insect interactions develop in shallow-soil and vertical systems, and how ecological insights can be translated into design principles for next-generation green façade panels. The work combines fundamental and applied research, including the design and setup of mini-ecosystems in minimal-soil environments, year-round monitoring at Living/Field Lab locations, biodiversity assessment, and analysis of energy-efficiency and microclimate effects.
The position is embedded in the Biosystematics Group and the Laboratory of Entomology at WUR, with supervision by Casper Quist and Bregje Wertheim. The candidate will also work one day per week with the wider BIO-SKIN team at the AMS Institute in Amsterdam and be part of the PE&RC graduate school.
Applicants should hold an MSc in forest and nature conservation or biology, have strong knowledge of the Dutch flora, be able to identify plant species in the field, and show interest in ecological interactions, interdisciplinary collaboration, teaching, and scientific writing. Dutch and English at C1 level are expected.
This is a fully funded PhD position. The salary ranges from €3,204 gross per month in year 1 to €4,051 in year 4, with a temporary 18-month contract that may be extended for the project duration. The application deadline is 2 November 2026.
To apply, submit a CV and motivation letter via the WUR vacancy page and complete the mandatory online form. Only applications submitted through the website will be considered.
