About this position

University of Inland Norway (INN), Norway, is recruiting a PhD candidate in Bioinformatics and Machine Learning for a project on infection diagnostics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The position is based at the Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Applied Ecology, Agricultural Sciences, and Biotechnology (ALB), with the designated workplace in Hamar.

The successful candidate will join the Ahmad group led by Professor Rafi Ahmad and work within a multidisciplinary environment spanning machine learning, biostatistics, bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, clinical microbiology, microscopy, and spectroscopy. The project is part of the BioAI initiative and also contributes to the UTI-Diag and OH-AMR-Diag projects, aiming to build a proof-of-concept diagnostic system for rapid, accurate, on-site detection of infections, pathogen identification, resistance profiling, and antibiotic susceptibility prediction.

Research tasks include maintaining and improving a pathogen-identification pipeline from next-generation sequencing data, including ONT long-read sequencing, redesigning the group’s pathogen detection software Voyager, and contributing to algorithm development for sequence analysis and related computational problems. The role also involves close collaboration with laboratory and clinical partners and completing a PhD thesis plus coursework within the 3-year fellowship.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should normally hold a master’s degree or equivalent in bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, computer science, or a closely related field; have a strong academic record (typically B average or better); and demonstrate strong programming skills in C++, Rust, or Java, bash/scripting ability, and experience with bioinformatics pipelines or genomics. English proficiency is required, and non-English-speaking applicants must document it with an approved test such as TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or CPE.

Funding: this is a paid 3-year PhD fellowship, placed in the Government Salary Scale (position code 1017, paygrade LT 54), with life insurance, occupational injury insurance, pension contributions, and access to Norway’s public health system.

Application window: deadline is 2026-11-05. Apply electronically via Jobbnorge and upload the required documents before the deadline.

What's required

Applicants must qualify for admission to the University of Inland Norway PhD program in Applied Ecology and Biotechnology and normally hold a master's degree or equivalent (120 credits) in bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning, computer science, or a closely related field. A strong academic record is required, typically an average grade of B or better in the master's program. Applicants must not already hold a PhD. Required skills include strong hands-on programming in C++, Rust, or Java; strong command-line/bash and scripting skills; demonstrated ability to solve algorithmically demanding problems; and experience with bioinformatics pipelines, sequencing data, especially long-read/ONT, or genomics. English proficiency is required; applicants from non-English-speaking countries must document competence through an approved test such as TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or CPE. Desired qualifications include machine learning/AI experience, infection biology and/or AMR experience, interdisciplinary teamwork, and scientific publications.

How to apply

Apply electronically through the Jobbnorge portal and upload a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts/certificates, at least two references, and a complete publication list. Upload attachments as separate files and ensure everything is submitted before the deadline. If final master's documentation is pending, submit the thesis and transcript.
