About this position

This funded PhD project is based in the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering within the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds, with supervision from Professor Sophie Williams and Professor Ruth Wilcox. The research aims to develop and validate a pre-clinical framework to understand and predict periprosthetic femoral fracture after total hip replacement. The project combines finite element analysis, CT-derived modelling, musculoskeletal modelling, high-resolution imaging, and laboratory fracture experiments using hip simulators and other mechanical testing methods.

Research topics include implant design, bone quality, fixation method, loading conditions, fracture torque, load-displacement behaviour, strain, and fracture morphology. The work is intended to support better clinical decision-making for total hip replacement devices and their positioning, with translational relevance to orthopaedic engineering and HealthTech.

Funding: EPSRC Faculty Doctoral Training Partnership Award in collaboration with Depuy. The award covers full academic fees and provides a tax-free maintenance grant at the standard UKRI rate of £21,805 for 3.5 years. There is one funded place available.

Eligibility: UK applicants only; candidates must be eligible for Home (UK) fee status. Applicants should normally have at least a first-class or upper second-class honours degree in mechanical engineering, medical engineering, or a related discipline, with strong computational skills and ideally some laboratory experience. English language requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component or equivalent.

Deadline: 30 September 2026. The project start date is 1 February 2027.
