About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Bristol in bio-inspired robotic systems for investigating biological signalling and adaptive behaviour.
This project develops bioinspired soft robotic systems as embodied platforms for studying how living systems coordinate responses through physical interaction, sensing, control, and information transfer. The research sits at the intersection of robotics, mechanical engineering, biophysics, cybernetics, materials science, and computational modelling.
Possible directions include simulation of biological signalling and information transfer, design of soft robots with multimodal sensing inspired by biological tissues, study of mechanical and environmental signals in adaptive behaviour, distributed sensing and decentralised control, and exploration of resilience and self-protective behaviours in compliant robotic systems.
The project aims to produce novel soft robotic platforms, computational models linking materials and control, experimental methods for studying embodied biological principles, and publications across robotics, biomechanics, materials science, and bio-inspired engineering.
Eligibility: a Master's degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, or a related field. Experience in soft robotics, compliant mechanisms, smart materials, embedded sensing, biomechanics, simulation, prototyping, or experimental design is desirable. Strong programming and robot design skills are an advantage.
Funding: competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide.
Location: Bristol, United Kingdom.
Applications: reviewed as received. Register your interest via the FindAPhD enquiry form on the project page.
