About this position
PhD opportunity in causal multi-omics modeling of disease biology at the International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz, Germany, within the Institute of Molecular Biology. The project is hosted by the research group of Vincent ten Cate and sits in the context of the BMFTR-funded DIASyM project.
This PhD focuses on developing new statistical and computational methods for integrating heterogeneous molecular data to infer causal mechanisms of disease. The work combines statistical genetics, systems biology, and machine learning, with emphasis on causal inference across genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and related omics layers. The disease area of interest is cardiovascular disease.
Possible methodological directions include Mendelian randomization, Bayesian hierarchical models, Gaussian graphical models, multi-layer data integration, network-based regularization informed by protein structure and embeddings, and scalable inference for genome-wide applications. The project also highlights protein-protein interaction patterns, structural similarity, and data-driven embeddings as prior information for causal modeling.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in statistics, mathematics, data science, bioinformatics, physics, engineering, or a related quantitative field. Required/preferred skills include knowledge of statistics, interest in machine learning, experience with R and/or Python, good English, an interactive personality, and two letters of reference.
The position is fully funded until completion of the thesis. The application deadline is 15 October 2026. Interviews are planned for 18–19 January 2027 in Mainz, and the starting date is between 1 February and 31 July 2027.
Apply through the IPP online application platform and select ten Cate as your group preference.
