About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Limerick in circular electronics, eco-design, automated remanufacturing, and sustainable manufacturing. This call advertises 2 fully funded PhD positions within the ECODESIGN Doctoral Network, a pan-European research and training initiative focused on developing the next generation of experts in circular economy practices and sustainable product design.
The project combines electronics lifecycle management, automated electronics disassembly, Industry 4.0, human–robot collaboration, and Digital Product Passports (DPPs). The successful candidates will work on PhD research focused on eco-design for automated electronics remanufacturing, with emphasis on printed circuit boards (PCBs) or life consumption monitoring and DPPs. The work involves designing product architectures that support efficient disassembly, testing, reuse, repair, remanufacturing, and recycling, while also assessing environmental, social, and economic impacts.
Supervisors listed are Prof. Eoin Hinchy, Prof. Eoin O’Connell, and Prof. Colin Fitzpatrick at the University of Limerick. Informal enquiries may be sent to [email protected] or [email protected].
Funding is provided through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) fellowship. The positions are full time, last 36 months, and include full tuition coverage plus support for equipment, conference travel, and publications. Expected start date is January 2027.
Eligibility highlights include a first-class honours NFQ Level 8 degree or a relevant master’s degree in electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechatronics, robotics, computer science, or a closely related field. Applicants should have strong English, technical writing ability, and experience or knowledge in at least two of the following: automation and robotics, electronics/PCB design or manufacturing, programming/software development, digital manufacturing/Industry 4.0, design for disassembly/remanufacturing/recycling, or data analysis/AI/ML. International secondments are required.
Apply by email with a cover letter, CV, referee details, full transcript, and evidence of relevant project/research work. Applications are accepted until 2026-10-30 17:00.
