About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds / Leeds University Business School on communicating model uncertainty in climate information to decision makers.

This project sits within the UNRISK CDT and explores how uncertainty in climate information can be communicated more effectively, especially in the context of seasonal forecasting, but potentially also interannual forecasts and longer-term climate projections. The research is interested in how to present probabilistic forecasts together with information about model quality, how to characterise model uncertainty for different use contexts, and how to tailor communication for audiences with different levels of numeracy and climate knowledge.

Relevant study areas include statistics, climate science, data analysis, data science, human geography, communication and media studies, and public policy. The project may involve developing and testing different communication formats, considering user needs, and examining how decision makers interpret uncertainty information.

Funding: fully funded NERC studentship with full tuition fees, UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a flexible fund. International applicants are welcome, but they must cover visa and health surcharge costs.

Eligibility: strong statistics background required; experience in social/behavioural research methods or experimental design is helpful but not essential. Applications are open to UK and international applicants, though international awards are limited by UKRI rules.

Supervisor: Dr Andrea Taylor.
