About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Electrical Engineering, focused on communication-optimized inference in large language models. The project, called COIL, sits at the intersection of computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, and information technology, with a strong emphasis on AI infrastructure, high-performance networking, distributed systems, and network modeling.

You will study how multiple GPUs exchange intermediate results during distributed LLM inference, and how network congestion, flow control, topology, bandwidth, and parallelization strategies affect latency, buffer requirements, and energy use. The research combines Network Calculus, optimization, analytical modeling, software/tool development, and experimental validation on programmable networking testbeds.

Supervision is led by Prof. Lisa Maile (Network Modeling and Design / NoMaD Lab) at TU/e, with collaboration from the Model-Based Design Lab, AMOR/e, and Prof. Georg Carle and his group at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The position is funded through the EuroTech programme, and includes a required six-month research stay in Munich.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field; strong mathematical background; good programming skills; analytical ability; interest in high-performance networking and AI infrastructure; excellent English; and willingness to spend at least six months at TUM. Helpful experience includes computer networks, distributed systems, Network Calculus, simulation, mathematical optimization, GPU communication, P4, or SmartNICs.

Funding and conditions: full-time PhD employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is scale P (€3,204–€4,051 gross per month), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. The vacancy is located in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

How to apply: submit the application online via the vacancy portal. Include a cover letter, CV with publications and three references, transcripts of BSc and MSc studies, and a first-author writing sample in English. The vacancy remains open until filled, and complete applications are prioritized.
