About this position

PhD opportunity in Computational Imaging and Scientific Software Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (Chair of Biological Imaging) in collaboration with the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging at Helmholtz Munich.

The project focuses on building a modern, open, and extensible software ecosystem for optoacoustic image reconstruction and analysis, turning research algorithms into robust tools, and exploring AI-assisted and agentic workflows for scientific imaging. The role sits at the intersection of software engineering, computational imaging, inverse problems, biomedical imaging, and scientific computing.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in Computer Science, Data Analysis, Software Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field. Strong programming skills, preferably in Python, experience with non-trivial software development, and a solid understanding of algorithms, numerical methods, scientific computing, or machine learning are expected. The post also values clean, maintainable, well-tested code, user-focused development, and strong communication skills in English.

Helpful extras include experience with git, automated testing, packaging, documentation, code review, GPU/HPC, LLMs or tool-using agents, and optoacoustics or related imaging technologies. The position is embedded in major EU and German government funded research and innovation programs and offers access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, international collaboration, and opportunities for patents, technology transfer, and commercialization.

The appointment is initially for 3 years with possible extension. Compensation is according to TV EntgO Bund EG13-75%. The post is based in Munich, Germany.
