About this position

PhD opening in Data Science for Biomedical Imaging at the Chair of Biological Imaging, Technical University of Munich (TUM), in collaboration with the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich.

The successful candidate will analyze unique preclinical and clinical imaging datasets from cutting-edge optoacoustic imaging and sensing technologies, with the goal of extracting new biological and medical insights from complex real-world data.

Research tasks include developing innovative data analysis and image analysis methods, robust statistical approaches, uncertainty quantification, validation strategies, and machine learning pipelines tailored to small, heterogeneous, or noisy datasets. The role emphasizes understanding what information is contained in the data, how it can be extracted reliably, and how confidently conclusions can be drawn.

Required background: a degree in Data Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; strong academic record; strong programming skills, preferably Python; and experience with scientific data analysis. Applicants should be curious, independent, proactive, collaborative, and fluent in English.

Advantageous experience includes statistics/statistical learning, probabilistic modeling, collaboration with experimental scientists or clinicians, LLMs or agentic workflows, and optoacoustics, ultrasound, optical imaging, or spectroscopy. German language skills are a plus.

The position is embedded in major EU and German government-funded research and innovation programs, offering strong scientific visibility, access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, international networking, and opportunities in patents, technology transfer, and commercialization. The contract is initially for 3 years with possible extension. Compensation is according to TV EntgO Bund EG13-75%.
