About this position

PhD opportunity at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in Electrical Engineering / Electronic Engineering, with strong links to materials science, physics, and chemistry.

This funded PhD project focuses on CVD growth of isotopically engineered carbon-doped hBN single-photon emitters. The research aims to develop a new chemical vapour deposition route to wafer-scale, quantum-grade hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) for room-temperature single-photon emitters, which are important building blocks for quantum communication and integrated quantum photonics.

The student will work on growing single-crystal hBN on molten copper and copper-tin alloys, using atomically smooth surfaces to reduce grain boundaries. The project also includes 10B isotopic enrichment to sharpen emission and pulsed delta-doping to confine carbon defects to a single atomic plane. Characterisation will include Raman, photoluminescence, and single-photon (g²(0) < 0.1) measurements.

Eligibility highlights: candidates should have a strong background in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or Chemistry. Experience with thin-film growth, especially CVD of 2D materials, and cleanroom nanofabrication is ideal. Familiarity with Raman, photoluminescence, SEM, or AFM is an advantage.

Funding: the project is advertised as a funded PhD project for students worldwide. No stipend amount or tuition details are stated in the post.

Application: applications are accepted all year round. Interested candidates should register their interest via the FindAPhD project page and submit an enquiry through the platform. The university will respond directly.
