About this position

University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is recruiting a 3-year PhD position in data-driven critical raw material supply chain resilience at SDU Life Cycle Engineering, Department of Green Technology, Faculty of Engineering, in Odense, Denmark.

The project focuses on how low-carbon technologies, electrification, and digital infrastructure affect demand for critical raw materials, supply dependencies, bottlenecks, and resilience. The research environment combines environmental systems analysis, supply-chain research, and data science, with links to industrial ecology, material flow analysis, circular economy, and sustainability transitions.

The PhD will develop modular, transparent, reusable, and reproducible computational methods for dynamic material flow analysis. Possible methods include network analysis, geospatial analysis, scenario modelling, uncertainty analysis, machine learning, and AI-supported approaches. Application areas include Denmark’s wind-energy infrastructure and infrastructure supporting data centres and AI computing.

Applicants should have a relevant master’s degree and a strong quantitative background. Preferred areas include engineering, industrial ecology, sustainability science, resource management, data science, computer science, applied mathematics, operations research, supply-chain management, geoinformatics, mining, or geological sciences. Programming experience, preferably in Python, and skills in data cleaning, integration, and exploratory analysis are important. Good English and a strong interest in sustainability and critical raw materials are expected.

The position is jointly funded through research projects on critical raw material supply chains and Denmark’s climate-neutral transition. It is a salaried PhD fellowship with a monthly gross salary of 37,075 DKK including pension. The expected start date is 15 February 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
