About this position

Postdoc opportunity at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in machine learning, numerical modelling, wind flow prediction, coastal dunes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and aeolian sand transport.

The Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Physical Geography at Utrecht University is recruiting a 2-year postdoctoral researcher to improve coastal dune models using machine learning and numerical modelling. The project focuses on building a surrogate wind field model that can provide fast and accurate wind predictions for coastal dune simulations and support better coastal dune management.

Research tasks include evaluating current wind field predictions from the AeoLiS coastal dune model against field measurements and/or CFD simulations, identifying where simplified assumptions fail, training a machine learning model (for example PySR or neural networks) on CFD data, combining the surrogate model with AeoLiS, and validating the improved setup on existing case studies. The postdoc may also contribute to field data collection and will present results in stakeholder meetings, conferences, and journals.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD degree by the start date in Data Sciences, Computer Sciences, Physics, Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering, or a related field; strong background in data science, AI/machine learning, numerical modelling, and programming (preferably Python); English proficiency; collaborative and curious working style. Experience with AeoLiS, CFD, and aeolian field measurements is advantageous.

Funding and terms: full-time position (1.0 FTE) for 24 months, with a gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. The preferred start date is 1 January 2027, but it is flexible; the contract must end by 31 December 2028.

Application: submit your application through the Utrecht University portal using the Apply Now button. Include a CV, motivation letter, and at least two references. Deadline: 6 November 2026.
