About this position

PhD opening at École des Mines de Saint-Étienne (Institut Mines-Télécom), based at the SPIN – LGF center in Saint-Étienne, France, for a doctoral contract focused on development and characterization of a multi-sensor platform for monitoring onshore CO2 storage sites.

The project is part of CO2MET, a consortium involving IFPEN, BRGM, Mines Saint-Étienne, and Cerema. The research addresses long-term monitoring of geological CO2 storage sites, with emphasis on improving reliability, transparency, and local acceptance through better sensing and data interpretation.

Research topics include sensor instrumentation, CO2 sensing (NDIR or photoacoustic), oxygen sensing, environmental sensing (humidity, pressure, temperature), multivariate analysis, predictive algorithms, drift and reproducibility, linearity, variability in complex gas mixtures, and compensation for sensor aging. The work also includes laboratory characterization and field case studies at the Sainte-Marguerite site (Puy-de-Dôme).

Eligibility highlights: Bac + 5 or equivalent; ideally a Master 2 in measurement/instrumentation/metrology or data acquisition, processing and analysis; research internship or professional experience preferred; strong experimental interest; solid knowledge of sensors, data processing, multivariate analysis, probability/statistics, and Python; good English communication skills.

Funding: doctoral contract, 3-year fixed-term contract. No stipend amount is specified.

How to apply: submit CV, cover letter, recommendation letter if applicable, and identity document via the Recruitee application portal. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and selected candidates are interviewed by videoconference.
