About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Exeter in Economics, focused on devolution of agri-environmental policy for enhancing nature and achieving net zero.
The project sits at the interface of environmental science, data science, machine learning, statistics, economics, and agriculture. It asks how national environmental objectives and budgets should be translated into regional and local decisions, and how those decisions should adapt under uncertainty. The student will work with high-resolution systems models that predict the carbon, biodiversity, and water-quality consequences of land-use change at field/parcels scale.
Research themes include spatial modelling, optimisation, uncertainty quantification, decision support, and policy design for land-use change. The project aims to connect decisions across scales, such as allocating national budgets across regions and designing regional incentives, constraints, or local targets that collectively deliver national goals. The work is linked to UNRISK and includes collaboration with policymakers on live land-use policy questions.
Supervision is by Prof Daniel Williamson and Dr Amy Binner at Exeter. Co-supervision by an environmental economist brings expertise in incentives, behaviour, and policy design.
Funding: this is a fully funded PhD studentship through the UNRISK CDT, covering full tuition, a UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, and cohort training support. Applications are open to UK and international applicants, though international awards are limited by UKRI rules.
Ideal applicants should have a strong quantitative background in statistics, computer science, or economics, and be motivated to apply these skills to real-world decision problems with policy impact.
Deadline shown on the listing: 13 January 2027.
