About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in Uncertainty in AI-Augmented Climate Risk Analytics for Global Food Supply Chains.

This project sits at the intersection of climate science, data science, environmental geography, human geography, information systems, mathematical modelling, and public policy. The research addresses how climate shocks such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves propagate through global food trade networks and how human decision-making under uncertainty can amplify or dampen cascading failures.

You will work with a validated multiplex shock-propagation framework and develop an AI-driven cognition layer using a foundation model / transformer-based approach. The project involves curating and harmonising behavioural, trade, and climate datasets; fine-tuning models to predict subjective risk perceptions and strategic delays; and running large-scale simulations of compound climate extremes to produce actionable uncertainty maps for resilient food supply chains and trade policy.

Supervisors: Dr Roger Cremades and Dr Nick Malleson, University of Leeds.

Funding: Fully funded NERC studentship through the UNRISK CDT, including full tuition fees, a UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a flexible fund. International applicants are welcome, though awards are limited and visa/IHS costs may apply.

Eligibility: The advert seeks highly motivated STEM graduates with strong Python programming skills and familiarity with PyTorch/JAX or network libraries such as NetworkX/igraph. Prior experience in food systems or climate policy is not required.

Location: Leeds, United Kingdom.

Application: See the project page and the UNRISK website for further details and application instructions.

Funding details

Competition-funded PhD project within the UNRISK CDT. What's required

Highly motivated STEM graduates are sought. Applicants should have excellent programming skills in Python and familiarity with PyTorch/JAX or network libraries such as NetworkX/igraph. Prior experience in food systems or climate policy is not required, but curiosity about human-environment interactions and a passion for grand societal challenges are essential.

How to apply

Review the project details and the UNRISK website for more information. Use the application route on the FindAPhD/UNRISK pages to submit your PhD application. Check eligibility carefully, especially if applying from outside the UK.
