About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia (School of Environmental Sciences) on drivers and consequences of recent changes in bird migration.

This project investigates how and why migratory birds are changing their behaviour, including reductions in migratory distance, shifts in timing, and cases where individuals become sedentary. The research combines ecology, animal movement, remote sensing, data science, and zoology, with a strong conservation focus.

Research themes and methods: remote sensing and long-term tracking datasets (including data available on Movebank) will be used to quantify changes in migration timing, distance, and sedentary behaviour across species and populations; assess how climate and resource availability influence these changes while accounting for species traits and phylogenetic history; test whether lower post-breeding resource reductions are linked to shorter migration or non-migration; and examine whether access to new foraging resources, including anthropogenic food sources, affects migratory behaviour.

Training and environment: the student will join a supportive research environment at UEA and collaborate with BIOPOLIS/CIBIO, BTO, and the University of Lisbon. The project includes fieldwork in Portugal with co-supervisors and training in deploying tracking devices on wild birds, analysing tracking and spatial datasets, programming, statistics, and scientific presentation.

Eligibility: applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1. The project is aimed at highly numerate candidates; relevant research experience is advantageous. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category.

Funding: competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Location: Norwich, United Kingdom.

Start date: 1 October 2027.
