About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Exeter in Mathematics and Statistics on whether forests are becoming more vulnerable to climate extremes.

This project sits within the UNRISK CDT and combines satellite data analysis, statistical risk modelling, climate science, ecology, environmental science, and mathematical modelling. The research will use decades of satellite records of forest photosynthesis and carbon stocks to study how forests respond to heatwaves and droughts, how quickly they recover, whether repeated extremes increase vulnerability, and whether early-warning signals in photosynthesis can predict longer-term carbon loss.

The project will also compare these observations with the JULES land surface model, which contributes to the international Global Carbon Budget, to identify where model behaviour differs from satellite evidence and where improvements are needed in representing climate risk to the land carbon sink.

Supervision is provided by Dr Mike O'Sullivan, Prof Theo Economou, and Dr Thais Rosan. The student will develop skills in satellite data handling, statistical modelling of environmental extremes, and climate model evaluation.

Funding: fully funded NERC studentship with full tuition, UKRI-rate stipend, research/training costs, and cohort training support. Eligibility: strong background in mathematics, statistics, climate science, or remote sensing. Location: Exeter, United Kingdom. Deadline: 2027-01-13.
